Description
The Meherrin River Regional Jail was a collaboration among three Virginia counties. SteelCell of North America assisted the design and build team of Moseley Architects, Thompson & Litton Architects, and English Construction on this project.
The award-winning design-build team maximized the floor plan’s efficiency. There were two separate facilities: the jail support building and the housing building. This design included a work release area separated from the rest of the jail by secure perimeter construction.
SteelCell converted many detention areas from masonry to modular construction. Some units consisted of unique modular items including holding cells, change-out rooms, single and group shower units, program areas, and rooms for video visitation.
SteelCell designed and provided a total of 325 detention units consisting of 65 different designs. The final product was a 400-bed facility, designed and built over the span of just 20 months. The project achieved LEED certification with the U.S. Green Building Council in 2013
